Lancet launches WASH commission
The Lancet has launched the Lancet Commission on water, sanitation and hygiene, and health, naming Dr. Matthew Freeman, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Environmental Health, as one of 20 commissioners. “Many in this sector feel that this is an inflection point and that the current interventions are both insufficient to improve access sustainably and equitably, and to improve health and well-being,” says Freeman. “The commission was formed to set a course for where this sector needs to go.”
The commission will release a report with its recommendations in 2022. Several other Rollins researchers from the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health and the Hubert Department of Global Health will contribute, including Dr. Thomas Clasen, Rose Salamone Gangarosa Chair in Sanitation and Safe Water, Dr. Bethany Caruso, assistant professor, and Dr. Sheela Sinharoy, assistant professor.
